Android Stock Messaging Application with Google Voice Help

Content

How does Stock Messaging App with Google Voice work?
We have rebuilt Android Stock Messaging application with Google Voice support. In essence, our application will allow you to receive and send Google Voice and carrier texts within the same application.

Our application will use your data plan or WIFI (when available) for your Google Voice texts. As sending and receiving Google Voice texts will go over your data plan / WIFI, you won't be charged for incoming and outgoing Google Voice texts.

If I upgrade to PRO version, do I still have to buy this application for my other devices?
No, when the application prompts you to upgrade to PRO version, your purchase will be associated with your email address. As long as you are using the same email address on your other devices, if you download this app as a trial, it will automatically become the PRO version. If you uninstall, and want to reinstall in the future, since you have already purchased it, when you download the trial version, it will automatically become PRO version again.  So in essence, you will need to purchase the app only one time! Thank you

How to prevent getting double notifications after installing Stock Messaging App with Google Voice?
After installing Stock Messaging App with Google Voice, there are few steps you need to do in order to prevent your phone getting double notifications. Google Voice application itself will display you notifications for new texts as well as the stock messaging application. Now, since you also have our version of stock messaging application with Google Voice, it will also display you notifications for new texts. This can be quite frustrating. But don't worry. All you need to do is to open up each application, and disable their notification for new texts. After then, you will receive notifications only on "Stock Messaging App with GV" application.

Please follow the below directions in order to disable double notifications for new texts on Android Stock Messaging application and Google Voice.

Disable new notifications on Google Voice application.
Open up Google Voice application.
Go to settings
Go to Sync and Notifications from the settings screen.
Click on Receive text messages.
Choose "Via the Google Voice app"
Uncheck "Text notifications"

After following all of these steps, your Google Voice settings should look like this.

Disable new notifications on previous stock messaging application
Open up stock (default Android) messaging application
Go to Settings screen
Uncheck "Notifications"

After following all of these steps, your Stock Messaging Application settings should look like this.

After disabling notifications on Google Voice and previous stock messaging application, you will receive notifications on only "Stock Messaging App with GV".

Do I still need to have Google Voice application installed on my phone if I want to use Stock Messaging App with GV?
Yes, our application uses existing Google Voice application, therefore, you don't need to share your Google credentials with us.

Will Stock Messaging App with GV drain my Android's battery?
No, our application uses Google Voice push notifications, and runs only when you receive a text and send a text. Therefore, you will not notice any battery usage on your phone.

Can I also send MMS from my Google Voice number with using Stock Messaging App with GV?
Unfortunately, Google Voice doesn't support MMS. When you send MMS within our application, it will go through from your phones carrier.

I bought the Stock Messaging App with GV, will I be charged for the upcoming updates?
No, you will receive life time free updates.

Will Stock Messaging App with GV work on custom (modified) ROMs?
Yes, It should work on most of the custom (modified) ROMs. However, there's no way for us to guarantee it will work on all of them. If you are on a custom ROM and this application works fine, please do email us at dreambigandroid@gmail.com, so we can include your ROM in the supported ROMs.
If Stock Messaging App with GV doesn't work on your ROM, please email us, we will try everything to make it work on your custom ROM.

How do I set this application to use Google Voice all the time, instead of asking me what to use each time I send a text?
When you open the app, hit the menu key, then open up "Settings"
You will see a setting "Compose New Text Using", click on that.
Choose Google Voice from the list. You are all set. You can reverse this action by going back to this setting.

Can Messaging+Google Voice send the text based on where the text was received from (either on your Google Voice account, or carrier) - Smart Reply?
Yes. This is exactly what Smart Reply does.
Go to Messaging+Google Voice app.
Hit the menu key, go to Settings.
Under Google Voice section, you will see a "Smart Reply" checkbox. Enable it.
You are all set.

* Note : If this option is enabled, you won't be prompted if you want to use Google Voice or Carrier for the outgoing messages. The app will send the message with either Google Voice or carrier, based on where the "last text on the thread" was received from.

Here's an example :
You get a text on your Google Voice number.  Messaging + Google Voice receives it. If you reply, you won't see the Compose Text With popup. It will automatically use Google Voice. Because the last text on that thread came from Google Voice.

You get a text on your carrier number. Messaging + Google Voice receives it. If you reply, you won't see the Compose Text With popup. It will automatically use your carrier service as the last text on that thread was received on your carrier number.

When I send a text, I no longer see "SENDING VIA GOOGLE VOICE". What happened?
Please read the above section. You probably turned the Smart Reply option on. Please go to settings and turn it off.

I found a bug / have a recommendation for the app, what should I do?
Please email us at dreambigandroid@gmail.com about your recommendation or the bug you have found on our application. Our goal is to make our application the best. If you are email us about a bug you have found, please include your Android version, phone model and a screenshot.

How to make Messaging + Google Voice work with the latest version of Google Voice?
Messaging + Google Voice will work flawlessly with the latest version of Google Voice on Android JellyBean+. If you are running an older version of Android, unfortunately you will need to downgrade Google Voice app in order to receive notifications.

You will need to open up Google Voice settings, and set it up exactly as the one in the screenshot. Make sure to choose "Via the Google Voice app" in "Receive text messages" section. Once you do so, you will receive double notifications. One from Google Voice app, and other from Messaging + Google Voice app. In order to completely stop notifications from Google Voice, go to Android Settings and disable notifications for Google Voice app. This is shown in the second screenshot below.

Make sure "Show notifications" box is unchecked. In order to get to this settings, Click on Settings in Android Launcher, then click on Apps and then click Google Voice. It will take you to settings page shown in the above picture.

  1. am I able to receive MMS with this app?

  2. You can send and receive MMS via your phone carrier, not Google Voice as MMS is not yet supported by Google Voice. Once Google Voice upgrades their system to support MMS, we will definitely be upgrading our app to support it as well.

    1. This suggests that Google Voice will definitely be supporting MMS in the future. Is that the case, or were you simply saying "if google offers it we'll add it in"?

  4. What's the problem? Can you report it when it crashes, so we can see the details? Can you give us more details?

  5. Suggestions:

You should pick a more attractive icon for your app. The current one isn't bad, but it's rather underwhelming. I think you'd pull in more customers with a more aesthetically pleasing icon.

I would add into the app's description as a way to save money to switch to google voice to avoid text messaging fees. People love it when they have the opportunity to save money.

Thirdly, I saw that you're going to support themes in the future. This is awesome and I can't wait for them, but please listen to my idea. The themes should be as customizable as goSMS. Make it so other developers can make themes for the app.

I think the default set of themes should resemble the different flavors of android, like HTC, Samsung, MIUI/iPhone, ect. The SMS popups should also go with the theme.

So far, this app is awesome, and I don't regret buying it.

    1. Please don't listen to his suggestions. A messaging app should not be that complicated, besides the Jelly Bean is so simplistic in looks, it beats any other platforms app by miles and miles. Stay with it...

    2. How about removing the picture boxes of the contact i'm texting. Or, in the alternative, give users the choice to have the pictures or not to have the pictures.

      Delete
    3. I personally like the contact boxes, but yeah i want to see lots of customizable options with this app. Much like theme options that gosms has, but minus the bloat.

    4. Actually, it is precisely the look, layout and functions of this app that drew me to it. I absolutely love the fact that the interface is nearly identical to Google Talk Instant Messenger. Please, do not make changes as Blake suggested. I've used GoSMS for a while and it is a quality, all inclusive app, but if I wanted an app like that I would just USE GoSMS.

Now, if I could only get my sms notifications from sma+gv to actually show up. =)

    1. Hi Vernon.

Just saw your review on the market about the MMS crash.. Can you give me more details about it? Do you actually have MMS service on your phone? I got the error report, but just making sure you have MMS support on your phone through your carrier.

Let me know and I'll fix your problem asap.

  8. Once it takes you the stock messaging app, go to settings, there should be an enable gv setting.

  9. Would love to see a way to configure contacts so that you can set a default for carrier vs GV. For instance, some people I only text from carrier and some only ever from GV. I never switch back and forth. Or set it so that it always texts back via the service you're responding to. That way you only make the decision the very first time you text someone.

  19. 1) I have not gotten a call but if you can get your so to work with quick replies from the incoming call screen that would be awesome

    2) text count extention for the new dash clock lock screen widget would be nice

    3) ability to send text through Google now/voice command

    4) light flow support (I well email Dev)

    5) ability to mark read messages as read in Google voice

Some of these features may already work since this app is based on stock, but those things are the wishes I had for Google voice.

I am buying the app as it already serves it's purpose and Dev is highly responsive in here. Which as a suggestion you should put the link to this blog in the begging of your description so people can see the dialog you already have with people.

    Thanks

I had an issue with it not sending out my SMS via GV. I would get a red triangle. I contacted the developer, he immediately went to work, within a few hours & a couple of test runs, the app was fixed.

  30. It's been said that the Smart Reply option can cause texts to be sent via the carrier. But I had a problem where I installed a custom rom, then restored this app + its settings via Titanium Backup Pro. After restoring the app, all messages I replied to (that were all sent and received via GV) would only send via the carrier. The reply I got was that I had to turn off Smart Reply, but I'm not sure why I would have to do that, when the texts I was replying to were initiated and responded to via my GV number. I don't necessarily have a problem turning off Smart Reply, as I send and receive everything via GV, but in case I need to use my carrier to send an MMS message, since GV doesn't yet support it, I would have to use my carrier's service, which, then, I would expect to receive the messages back via the same, thus making the Smart Reply option useful.

How do I get rid of the "draft" text that appears by the conversation threads? Swipe to dismiss QR doesnt seem to work either. Running stock JB 4.2.2 Gnex4

  34. I would also suggest having it mark messages that were replied to with the pop up as read in the main messaging window. If one would reply to several messages via the pop up, he/she would see all of those messages still sitting as unread in the main app. Also, for those of us that care about proper sentence structure, could you make it so that upon clicking in the reply text area, that it would start us off with a capital letter? Maybe also the same after a period?

  37. @DreambigAndroid- Sort of good news. After the update today, When I open the app on my Note, and select a thread conversation it no longer freezes and goes to a black screen, and then to force close. Now it just immediately goes to FC and the report screen disappears. (So I can't send a report with data). So that is a change in how the program is reacting.

I uninstalled, and rebooted the phone. Re-installed the app, and......Still force closes (no black screen), but I could then send a report about the FC. Something new too - I am getting messages that funnel to messaging+GV, a pop up screen, but when I go to view the message, it force closes.

Works great on my Gnex, bought it last nite in hopes you can work out the bug. Keep up the good work :) I did notice that when uninstalling and reinstalling the purchased app on the other device, it does not say purchased next to the app like other paid apps in the google play store like all other purchased apps I have. So it does look like your post in red at the top of the page- trial or free version.

  40. The pop-up box is still incredibly small, at least on my Nexus 4, running JB 4.2.2. It should be big enough to show a full 160 character text message, in my opinion. Everything else seems to be addressed.

  41. Sorry! I will put my name on the report- just assumed it was included with the data. This has happened before, but I didn't think much about it. When it went dinging like a slot machine it got my attention! Lol. :) Don't make yourself crazy! It will come out right in the end. 44. First off, let me say thank you for developing this app. I have searched Google Play at least weekly for something that integrates GV and stock messaging. The last app that could do this I wasted $5 on because the "developer" just stopped updating it and it stopped working.

That being said, I wanted to share my thoughts on a few bugs I have noticed so far:
    1) It does not sync any messages that happen to be sent to GV while phone is off or rebooting.
    2) It would be helpful to have the option of a constant icon in the notification bar to ensure this app is running at all times.
    3) This app and the stock app look so similar I am afraid of accidently sending from the stock app again by mistake. Can you make your app somehow unique?
    4) Replies sent with the QuickReply popup are never sent. They persistently display the SENDING VIA GOOGLE VOICE tag and never go through.

I am using an HTC EVO 4G and CM7 Android 2.3.7

    Thank you!
    Brent

  45. Every single message I send through google voice your app will fail the first time. It used to just work, then it used to be a 50/50 chance that my message wouldn't fail, and now it's every single time. It's very annoying, what can I do to fix this?

    ReplyDelete
  46. It must be a nightmare developing for Android, with what seems like ten thousand devices to ensure compatibility for. Other than the pop up box still being tiny, it works perfectly for me on my Nexus 4.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So, Hallelujah!!! You won't believe this. I installed Ptmr's new JB rom on my i717- Note. Jedi-SOA (sons of android) build 2, android 4.2.2. Your messaging app is now working! Sends, receives, threads open without FC, and pop up works with the view button. :)

Who'd of thought an unofficial JB rom would make this work? Pretty cool. Rom is said to be very stable on the orig Note with no random reboots. Only had it for less than a day, but this is a good start. New release for the Note in their orig dev section on xda.

  48. I admit I didn't read through ALL the comments, but is there any way to make a text NOT go through unless it goes through GV? Sometimes when multiple messages go out, the app doesn't always send through GV despite the default settings. It "toggles" automatically.

  52. I would like to request contact pictures in the notifications, but otherwise love the app!

    ReplyDelete
  53. A feature that's not quite there....
It would be nice if you could call a contact in a thread. The option to call (the phone icon appears at the top) the contact in the thread appears when you send them a txt, but not before. I have not found a way to call a contact if they send me a txt, I read it and in such case, it would be easier to call them instead of txting back.

    ReplyDelete
  54. +dreambigandroid thank you for replying to my emails. I'm trying to spread the word around about this app to everyone who I know uses GV. This app is worth every penny, especially for the threaded conversions and seamless integration.

One question though: I enable the "receive text messages on this phone" in the GV website settings, because I need the ability to send using my phone signal because data is not reliable where I am. The your app does a flawless job of not showing me the weird number that google assigns when you have the "receive text messages on this phone" enabled. but is there a way of stoping the double notifications from occurring? I'm getting two notifications on the same thread (one for "received via GV" and one from the weird number, not from different apps). I'm not sure if I'm explaining it correctly. but let me know if you need me to explain it better.

    Either way, great job!!

    1. Do NOT use the "receive text messages on this phone" option - that forwards messages through your carrier. Go to the Google Voice app >> Settings >> Sync and notifications >> select: Receive text messages via the Google Voice App.

Now you will just get messages via the GV app and the Messaging + Google Voice app intercepts the messages to sync with your standard SMS inbox. Now disable text notifications from the GV app.

  55. I am having a problem with this app. I have had it working on my i717 for a couple days now. On a custom rom- Jedi-sons of android build 2 with 4Aces /29 kernel. This is the only rom this app works on for my phone. Every other rom would FC. With the stock kernel I was not getting audio on call, switched to the new kernel and now have audio on call.

However, now I can send texts with this app, goes out over google voice, but I do not get return texts on this app or the stock message app. It only comes in on the google voice app. I get no pop ups except for google voice app. Anyone else having this problem?

  57. I like the app, I really do. But after a less-than-24-hours trial I was presented with the "pay up or quit using it" message, and a $5 price tag. By not disclosing the in-app purchase price up front, you're setting up users to be put off by the price when it is finally revealed. I understand that some users may not even try the app if they know it will be $5 to continue using it after the trial, but I still think keeping the price a secret until the moment the app becomes non-functional is a mistake, and can lead to distrust from users.

  59. Trying out the app and it has some great potential. Not sure if it is possible, but would like to see some tighter integration with Google Voice.

First, I would prefer the "Mark Received Texts As Read" to only mark received GV text as read after it is read in this application or at least have that option. Looking for this option as I also use the GV extension in Chrome on my desktop to read and reply to text messages.

Second, I would like a way to archive messages in GV from this app. If a message was automatically archived when deleted in the app, that would be great. Even better would be an option to delete or archive from app where archive would delete from app and archive in GV and delete option would remove from both.

  60. Although I've no issues for a while, I'm starting to see some erratic behavior with it. I keep getting text message duplicates a few days after they're sent. Also, some of my messages over the last week never got pulled into the app. I thought I wasn't getting them, but opened up GV and there they were.

    Please advise.

  65. Converting message to MMS: If I start new message or reply and put in message boby text than attach an image, message is converted to MMS fine. If I start a new message or reply and I attach an image before I add the text body, it says its converting, but the compose screen quits and I'm sent back to the inbox.

If I have 'send all messages through GV' selected and send an attached image, it says sending through "SENT VIA GV - null" and no message was sent. Your FAQ says it would automatically default to 'carrier' for MMS.

I purchased the app because I felt confident in it even though the trial only allowed me to send about ten messages before forcing the purchase. Barely enough time to actually "try" an app. But that's a side point. Compared to other apps the price is a bit steep for something so unpolished.

However, I offer my payment as a vote that you stay motivated to develop further. I'm wanting an app like this. I just want it to work well.

    I'm running Android 4.0.4 w/ Kernel 3.0.8 on LG-MS770 (LG Motion).

    Bug or feature requests:
Bug regarding attach image before text body issue mentioned, above.
Bug regarding automatic use of 'carrier' for MMS even with GV set as default for the rest.
Want messages set as read in Google Voice when actually read in this app, not received.
Want MMS messages through carrier and SMS messages through GV to arrive at recipient as single conversation. Can message meta be modified in carrier sent MMS to match up with GV SMS messages at recipient?

Thanks for a great app so far.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. p.s. I give you another $5 if you can find a solution that message splitting issue. When in a SMS based conversation "A" and a MMS message is sent through carrier the recipient gets a new conversation "B" started for recipient based on my carriers phone number. It might not be possible, but I want my MMS message through carrier to show up in conversation "A" with my GV number as reply to number.

      ...or...

do you know anything about when Google Voice might implement full MMS. That would of course save you the trouble entirely.

I made a review centered around this issue, hopefully it gets fixed soon, although I'm sure you're working on the other problems first.

Whenever I use google now to send voice texts they send via carrier regardless of my messaging settings. This is also the case when I use llama to send automatic texts. They ignore the messaging settings and only try to send via carrier.

I don't have texts with my carrier so it makes it pretty useless.

The app worked flawlessly for about 15 minutes and about 10 test texts. Then I had to purchase it (your app says I get 200 messages free before having to pay to upgrade, which is misleading and a lie). So I cough up the $5 and the app stops working. I get the messages from people in the app, but any messages I send come from the weird random number. Exactly what I was looking for an app to avoid! Exactly what the app claims to do! Exactly what the app did for the first 15 minutes then forced me to waste $5 and stop working. I've emailed with no reply. You claim to have customer support and troubleshooting but yet no replies. And there is a $5 charge on my bill for this wonderful broken inconvenient app. Wonderful!

I have followed everything as instructed on the blog (http://stockmessagingwithgooglevoice.blogspot.com/#makemessagingplusgvwithlatestversionofgooglevoice).

The issue I am having is when I text someone with the app (Google Voice being my default messaging system) it appears to go through...and my typed text shows in the app...however, when a person responds it is not "sync'ing" and the reply does NOT come through the app. I have opened Voice and there are all of my replies.

I have used this all day...and consistently GV replies or first time texts are NOT coming through the app.

Are you aware of this issue? I have Android 4.1.2 on a HTC One SV. I have Google Voice 0.4.2.82. I bought the Messaging + Google Voice app - so it should be running the latest version as well.

GV app works fine - by itself. The stock app works fine - by itself.

    Please advise!
